Overview

League of Geeks, the studio behind the indie hit, Armello, has launched a playable demo for their latest game, Jumplight Odyssey. The game, a roguelite colony sim, draws inspiration from both genre staples and the classic ’70s sci-fi anime. The demo is accessible to players during the Steam Next Fest, running from June 19-26, 2023.

Gameplay and Features

In Jumplight Odyssey, players are tasked with leading their crew on a daring escape to the sanctuary of the Forever Star, evading Admiral Voltan and the warmongering Zutopans. As the captain, players must maintain the human needs of the ship’s crew, such as socializing, sleep, food, water, and air. In addition, players will manage the growth, defense, and maintenance of their starship, across multiple decks, in an effort to keep the hope of their crew alive.

The game offers a unique starship dollhouse experience, with the crew interacting with each other in various capacities, from familial bonds to rivalries. As the captain, it’s up to the player to manage these relationships and ensure the crew’s morale stays high.

Exploration plays a significant role in Jumplight Odyssey. Players can traverse different star systems, each having varying impacts on the ship and crew. Emergent systems such as fire, electrical strikes, radiation, and oxygen loss are among the challenges that captains must manage.

Battles and Promotion

Combat is an essential aspect of the game. Players will have to fend off hostile boarding parties and launch their starfighters against intergalactic invaders. They can promote everyday crew members to division officers, adding a layer of strategy as they manage their differing quirks and management styles.

Repeat and Rerun

Every journey in Jumplight Odyssey brings with it new lessons, allowing players to retool their ships to better handle new circumstances. As players continue to explore the galaxy, they can expect to encounter new events, characters, and challenges each time they escape.

Building and Management

On the building side of things, Jumplight Odyssey lets players scratch their naval ship-building itch. From laying out optimum corridors to decorating spaces, players can customize their ship to their liking. They will also manage resource production, from water supply to farming spaces, and handle inventory management within the ship.

Inspired by ’70s anime adventures like Star Blazers, Jumplight Odyssey provides a dynamic, toy-like sandbox that engages players in its unique, star-spanning journey. And, as a delightful touch, it also features a pig on board that players can interact with.
